Benchmark Trials of Wireless Sub Do It Again
Project 1.2’s three leaders over its lifetime with driller, Alex Hardy (pointing at monitor) in 2011. The three project leaders are Luiz Franca (left), Thomas Richard (left middle) and Stephen Banks (right). The picture was taken at the Brukunga Drilling Research and Training Facility, the site of the successful Wireless Sub trials. Did they imagine back in 2011 the road that lay before them?
We reported on the Wireless Sub’s success in meeting and going beyond its productivity performance targets in benchmark trials in August’s issue of EXPLORE. That trial was constrained to use the same rotation speed as the driller had when establishing the performance baseline. A second trial had no constraints, allowing the research team’s full strategy to be enacted. As in the first trial, rate of penetration was improved by just over 10% (the productivity performance target), but in the second trial drill bit life was also increased by a factor of 2.5.
